It occurred to me to today how great it is when people get on well, when they encourage each other, when they are unconsciously kind, when they are humble in victory, when they help someone and no one knows they have done it. It also occurred to me today when our 7 year old and 9 year old had a good old fashioned fisty cuff with tears and screams how tense and difficult it was. I was distracted by this and not able to do much else.
This "not able to do much else" is the workplace many of us live in and it stops or limits us from getting with things that really matter. Things happen in the work place the mean we are "not able to do much else" - do any of these resonate:
- Ideas get put down even though I think they are great (and still do after they get put down)
- Ideas get ignored - someone else talks over people and it's like they never want to listen
- Someone comes up with a suggestion in front of the team and gets put down because the manager said that the team were doing it his way
- Decision making is slow and tedious - in fact more often than not they don't get made
- Meetings take place but nothing really comes out of it
- Hardly anyone except the top team know what is going on in the place
- There is no vision or purpose
- It is unclear what customers want - who are our customers by the way
These are all limiting factors right? Yes. These are all "things" that prevent or slow down progress. They prevent innovation / new ideas. Worse people feel deprived of using their gifts and skills in the workplace.
If this is you, talk to me now and ask how we can change it for the good. My kids are asleep now and think each other is great!
